Linksys Wired Router:: Upgrading Firmware BEFSR81 V3 On A Mac? Mar 14, 2009 I'm trying to upgrade the firmware on my BEFSR81 v3 cable router (firmware version 2.45.xxx) on a Mac. I accessed the interface via Safari browser, followed the instructions, got a message saying not to interrupt the process, but it never completed. So I tried it again (downloaded another copy of the firmware update), and same thing. No choice but to interrupt it.
My internet connection seems to be working fine, but now I can't access the router via the browser. I don't think the firmware actually updated. Should I power down the router and then reset it? Similar Messages:. ADVERTISEMENT Feb 20, 2011 I recently updated the firmware on my BEFSR81 v3.1 but would now like to revert to the previous version. Where I can find the earlier version? I've got 2.51.4, build 006 Aug 21 2009 and need the one before.
It's not a critical problem, but more of an annoyance. I power everything here off one big switch which goes off overnight. Before the update I'd just switch it all on in the morning and everything would, after a minute or so, work fine. Now, however, I have to power up the router a minute after the modem or it just sits there doing nothing. That's OK when I'm here, but if it's just the wife she can't reach the back to do it.
Jan 5, 2012 I have the Linksys BEFSR V2 router and at least once a day some or one of the ports become inactive and have to unplug the router and plug it back in to reset. I have ungraded to the latest firmware but this is still happening on a daily basis. Apr 11, 2012 I have a WAP54G in my basement shop, wired to our main router upstairs, which is a Linksys BEFSR81. I'm not sure if this is an issue with the WAP or the router. I only use the laptop computer in the shop every couple of days, but I leave the laptop plugged in and on most of the time. I used to have the power settings such that it didn't power down completely even after a long time. With that setup, if i didn't use the computer for several days, it would find that the connection to the router had died.
The wireless link would report that it had a solid connection, but I couldn't connect to anything. Power cycling the WAP always fixed this. Recently, I decided to save some wear & tear on the laptop drive, and adjusted the power settings to go to standby after a couple of hours. Now, it seems I can't even go one day without losing my connection. I am running the latest frimware in the WAP, and the router is version 3.1.
I can't check the firmware version on the router at the moment, because the web interface is giving me a blank screen. I know from past experience that I will have to power cycle it to get it to talk to me again. In any event, it seems like the router connection to the WAP is timing out. I set the router 'client lease time' up to 10000 a while back when I first had this problem, but that is clearly not doing the trick. Jun 18, 2011 My router was not functioning well so I decided it might be a good idea to reinstall the driver package via the admin upgrade page. Since then it doesn't work at all.

Apr 8, 2012 Problem (1)I was told that having two (2) gaming systems on the BEFSR81 router will cause both xbox machines to loose connections. My kids demonstrated this lockup with the Xbox. I think its because the Xbox connection is seeing 1 IP address for both game machines. Question is there a way to fix this without getting two DSL modems with two different IP addresses? Problem (1)My router BEFSR81 locks up at least once every 3 days and then randomly also. We reset it is by unplugging the power to the router and it reboots and returns to normal.
I also notice that the router is quite hot on the top, so I put a small quiet fan on top and the router now works longer before it locks up. (All green lights flash together or all on solid). So I thought gaming machines might be the reason for the lockup, we disconnected the xbox(s) and the router still locks up on occasion. I have read the other forum and found that Amazon could be a problem since I have been logging, I turned logging off but I still have the same lockup. Is my router dying a slow death. Dec 12, 2006 I just buy the BEFSR81,still not working. Feb 27, 2011 I try to make changes or save changes from the web page on my BEFSR81 nothing changes and everything revert back to the original setting made a long time ago. Cancel changes works fine as the page reloads, but save changes won't make it save or reload the page with saved settings. I updated java and used 3 different browser and always get that error.

Where is successfully updates. Is there a way to choose how often it updates?
Sep 13, 2011 I currently have a LinkSys BEFSR81 connected to my cable modem as I need at least 6 wired ports for my house network. I also have a WRT54GS that is currently unused, but I would like to add it to the network so I can have some wireless connectivity as well. Assuming that it's possible, what's the best way to combine these two units into the same network? Can the WRT54GS simply be connected downstream from the BEFSR81 via one of the open ports? I'm assuming that I'll have to change the IP address on the wireless unit to make it individually accessible for configuration, status checking, etc.
Nov 6, 2011 I want to use my old BEFSR81 as a switch only and for whatever reason it doesn't seem to allow me to do that.I've disabled DCHP but I don't see a way to disable the router. Is there some trick into using this router as a switch? Jan 28, 2010 BEFSR81 v3.1 Current firmware 2.51.4 build 600 (09-4-2009)The Web Admin pages become dysfunctional after the router has been up 3-4 days displaying only a blank white page. Viewing the page source shows that the HTML is incomplete.I am not sure of the exact firmware version where this problem originates, I noticed it after flashing to 2.51.4 build 400 but cannot remember which version was running before the update. Just flashed to 2.51.4 build 600 last week hoping the new version had corrected the problem. Still broken. The router remains completely functional but the Web interface does not work correctly after 3-4 days.I have tried re-flashing the firmware and have gone as far as resetting the router both before and after the flash, even tried 30/30/30 resets but the problem with the Web interface remains.Re-booting the router every 3 days is not the best “solution” as my network is running DHCP.
I would rather not fall back to older firmware as ver 2.51.4 build 400 corrected the DHCP errors on my Windows machines and decreased the initial connection time when machines boot up. I have read in this and other forums where others are having the same problem with this router/firmware but have been unable to find a working solution which leads me to believe the actual problem resides in the later firmware builds. Mar 7, 2011 When I am connected directly to my Surfboard modem I get 3000kbps upload with wired connection. With the BEFSR81Router conected I get 1000kbps. Jan 22, 2011 My router is a Linksys BEFSR81.Recently I installed a proxy server and now I would like to setup my router so that only the proxyserver (HTTP traffic) can connect to the Internet. Jun 2, 2012 From what I understand, it requires a 5V 2.5A adapter.
Alas, cannot find one. Mar 2, 2011 My BEFSR81 router has never been a problem for over 10 years. All of a sudden I can not connect to the internet.I only use the router for connecting 2 PCs to the internet modem. I have not changed any configuration. Tried my IPS COX recommendation to disconnect the power for about 1 minute then try again with no luck.
CoX said they tried pinging my router but could not get a reading. While waiting for them to come up with a solution, I hooked one of my PCs directly to the modem. So I tried it with the other PC. But it didn't work right away.
It kept trying to dial up for a connection. I finally got the WIZARD to get it configured correctly.
I assume it must be a router problem because either one of my PCs can get an internet connection when hooked to the modem. I did not pusue any further with COX, THEIR AUTOMATED TROUBLE SHOOTER WAS GETTING ON MY NERVES.Should I take the time to resolve the issue with the router or buy a new or refurbished router? If the task isn't too complicatged, I am willing to try and fix it. May 17, 2011 BEFSR81 will not save port forward info. I am trying to setup port forwarding for xbox (53, 80, 88, 1863, 3074), I click on enable to the far right and then click save at the bottom. It says settings are succeful, will return in 5 seconds.
When it returns everything is zeroed out. May 9, 2010 I am experiencing loss of internet access when browsing to amazon.com. In addition to losing internet access, I am unable to connect to my BEFSR81 router when this happens. To resolve I have to walk over to my router and reset it by cycling the power. This issue has been reported by other users of the BEFSR81 too: URL Details: My BEFSR81 is version 3.0 and is running firmware version 2.51.4 Apr 19, 2009 BEFSR81 v3.0.I selecting Enabled UPnP and now I cannot access the router.

Jan 2, 2012 I have the BEFSR81 V2 and every day at least one of the ports become inactive and the router has to be unplugged and plugged back in to reset the ports. I was going to upgrade the firmware from version 2.44.2 to the one on the site 2.45.10 but when it is downloading I get a message at the end upgrade file pattern error. The router's DHCP range is set to accommodate 12 devices. I have three computers wired to it and their Host names (as specified in the set-up of each computer) show up in the router's DHCP device table.
I also have two printers (one old Brother HL5250DN laser printer and one new HP Photosmart Premier C410a inkjet printer) connected and there are blanks where the Host name should go. I would like to be able to tell which printer is which when I am looking at the DHCP device table.
How can I get a names associated with each printer's IP address in the router's DHCP device table? (The real problem is that the router seems to have both printers at the same IP address (192.168.1.100) and if I can get one of them to change I'd like to know which one it was!) Jan 23, 2012 I'm attempting to upgrade to firmware 5.00.38 for my WRT54G-TM router, but it keeps telling me 'upgrade failed' after like 3-4 seconds of trying. It says I currently have firmware: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (06/13/09) mega - build 12288. I've tried restetting to factory defaults before upgrading, but doesn't work. Jan 3, 2012 I have a little problem with my new E1200. Before the E1200 I had a WRT160N that was bricked to death by a power surge due upgrading the firmware. Till that moment the WRT160N met al the required specs as told in the description.I have from my ISP a 40Mbit cable line and was always downloading at those speeds wired aswell as wireless.

Is it possible to downgrade the firmware?
You don't need to use Linksys' Windows software to upgrade the flash firmware in your Linksys Router. Unix to the rescue! Here's how:.
Download the latest firmware from Linksys, and extract the code.bin file from the archive (usually a zip). Place the code.bin file on your desktop. Go into your router's configuration screen and remove the password. Open a terminal and type cd /desktop. Run the tftp command with your routers IP number:% tftp 192.168.0.1.
At the TFTP prompt, type binary. Send down the new firmware by typing put code.bin and then hitting return.
If there was a short delay while the code.bin was transferred, and no errors are reported, then you are almost done. Go back into your router's admin screen and restore your password. Bonus: If you don't know your password, it ships from the factory as admin or if you forgot it, you can do a hard reset (see your manual). You can also, instead of using the tftp command, log into your router's web admin interface and goto the Update.htm page and use the Java upload applet. TFTP lets you rub the fuzzy UNIX underbelly of OS X, and really isn't that what it's all about?;). Word of advice blank the password by clicking inside the first window at the end of the line of dots then blanking by using the delete button on your keyboard till all the dots are gone.
Do the same in the second password box be sure to hit apply at the bottom of the page then do the tftp thing: jamesk @ /Users/jamesk/Desktop/update@Xmac-tftp 192.168.1.1 tftp binary tftp put code.bin Sent 453632 bytes in 24.2 seconds One last caveat: if you are using firewalling on your mac, be sure to flush the ruleset before you try this and then reinstall using brickhouse. You can flush the rules by: sudo ipfw flush enter password.
